Connectify Beta

Begun in 2009 as a demonstration on how far away wireless networks could be utilized, Connectify Beta is the latest installment in Connectify’s continually upgrading and advancing program that turns your PC into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Without the need for a router or any other odd bits of hardware, this application allows your phones, other computers, and tablets to all share a connection through your main PC. Free to download, the only thing your PC needs to become a hotspot is an active internet connection. With its easy installation and quick set-up, it’s a wonder routers are still in use.

Once the program is downloaded, it will automatically recognize your network card and immediately configure it as a hotspot, assigning it a network name. Sadly, this name can only be changed with the upgraded Pro version. After choosing a password or using the password generator already available in the program, clicking “Start Hotspot” turns your Wi-Fi access point on, allowing all devices with the password to connect to it. The Beta also includes a trial for Dispatch that lets you use multiple simultaneous connections to boost web speed. The Pro version does include increased accessibility including sharing 3G, 4G, and tethered connection plans through Wi-Fi and boosts the range, but with the basics covered, Pro is merely extra pieces for an already complete package.
